What is that big round block on my USB cable?

I have an external hard drive from Toshiba and the cable doesn't work, I tried other USB cables but they don't work. I think it might be the type but I am completely lost on this. The cable that came with the device has a round block midway through the cable, is that important? The other cables that I tried didn't have that.
