What is the best way to repair rubber souls on work boots using an adhesive\glue? One has started to split.?

Looking for a way to save my favorite work boots without having to buy new ones. The soul (rubber) on the bottom of one boot has begun to split (1/2"), yet the condition of soul overall is very good. Hoping and adhesive like glue orsome other means will help mend problem. Help!
