What are amazing volunteer/community service ideas for highschool students?

University today is so competitive that now a trip to south africa or india is not good enough. What are some ideas that will seem different and new? I know of one kid who bought second hand computers and taught the elderly how to use them. Is there any good fundraising ideas, or charities. Rehabilitating animals? etc
